Queen’s Hotel by BON Hotels
Luxury from a bygone era with a modern flair in the Ostrich Capital
Queen's Hotel by BON Hotels
The Queen’s Hotel by BON Hotels is located in the centre of Oudtshoorn, the global Ostrich Capital.
It is South Africa’s oldest four star and – impressively – the third oldest of all hotels in the country, after the Oude Werf in Stellenbosch (established 1686) and the Houw Hoek Hotel near Grabouw (built 1779).
Our Oudtshoorn accommodation uninterrupted since 20 March 1880, the Queen’s Hotel by BON Hotels is – today – an oasis of olde-worlde elegance and modern-day convenience located in the centre of the picturesque semi-arid Klein Karoo (Little Dry Region).
Mr John Ford was the first owner – although it is not known whether he was also the land surveyor (of the same name) who established the town of Oudtshoorn by pegging the first residential erven in 1847.
By 26 August 1863, Oudtshoorn was proclaimed a town by the government of the time who had seen the value of the ostrich industry – their sizeable feathers were much sought after by the fashion houses of Europe, with merchants in Cape Town paying a high price to farmers with these wares.
This grand dame of South African hospitality has recently been renovated to her full glory; and continues to offer guests a combination of sumptuous accommodation, first-class service and fine dining experiences that are reminiscent of a bygone era.
Located at 5 Baron van Reede Street, Oudtshoorn – which was formerly Queen’s Street, hence the establishment’s chosen name – Queen’s Hotel by BON Hotels offers a range of 42 non-smoking double, twin, family and deluxe rooms.
Thinking of booking a conference at Queen’s Hotel? We can offer a cinema-style seating arrangement for 60 people, a schoolroom type-setting for 40, or a U-shape offering for 24.
There’s something about travel that certainly stirs up a good appetite. At Queen’s Hotel, dinner is served at the upstairs Colony Restaurant – which offers superb meals for young and old and a reputable wine list.
In the morning, head through to the Breakfast Room for a sumptuous cooked or continental breakfast, buffet-style. Another option for light meals throughout the day is the Café Brûlé. Notable for the best coffee in town, this semi-enclosed street-side and very European café features its own bakery with freshly baked bread on sale daily.
You won’t want to miss the vibe at this Oudtshoorn institution while you’re in town, situated centrally as it is beside the sandstone former Boys’ High School.
