BON Hotels’ launch Heritage Day Braai-off

Introducing – The BONfire BRAAI MASTERS competition
Good meat, by good people

Twenty corporate teams will compete against one another in the ultimate urban braai-off, The BONfire Braai Masters competition, to be held on the roof-top at  BON Hotel Bloemfontein Central  on Heritage Day, Saturday 24 September. Celebrating our country’s heritage with a day of feast and fire, the braai, which has become a truly South African tradition, the event is one of many around the country providing fun for the kids, entertainment, food stalls and fantastic prizes, and all proceeds will go towards a local charity.

Each team of two will be given a mystery box of ingredients that they will use to create the plate of the day. Teams will be judged on their stand, team spirit, preparation, technique, coalfire quality, presentation and taste. The idea was sparked by a passing comment made by the CEO of BON Hotels, Guy Stehlik, about being a “braai-er of note”, at which some formidable Bloemfontein locals challenged him to put his money where his mouth is, and suggested a braai-off. And thus the BONfire Braai Masters came about – Stehlik will be competing, tongs and (alleged) talent at the ready.

The public are welcome – there is no charge – enjoy good food, good people and good feeling – there will be food stalls, pamper stands, your favourite beverages, entertainment and kids’ activities. Friends and family of the contestants are invited to stay on for food and fun as the sun sets over the city.

Pieter Van Rooyen, General Manager at BON Hotel Bloemfontein Central, hopes to make this an annual event to support the hotel’s current CSI initiatives and to give back to the community, his guests and staff.

Stehlik would like to roll out the competition to all BON Hotels next year. “It is a great idea and is in keeping with our ethos of Good people. Good thinking. Good Feeling’” he says. He is hoping he can take the heat and become the first BONfire Braai Master in Bloemfontein, but failing that, he says, “I can just be the braai master of my own backyard.”
