Hotel Verde boasts some of Africa’s “greenest” hospitality, ranging from its early construction phases to its future management.
Opening to the public in May 2013 and due for final completion in July, Cape Town developers Dematech want to use the 185-suite hotel to showcase how much can be done to reduce the environmental impact of a building when environmentally conscientious principles are applied from the start. “We have an advantage because we started from scratch. We could go from choosing recycled bricks and insulation, to installing a geothermal field, coupled to ground-source heat pumps. “When you build new you can plan much more than if you retrofit an existing building,” say hotel owners Mario and Annemarie Delicio, who are aiming for three or four tourism stars for over-nighters, business and leisure travellers and groups.
